I'm trying to figure out what my next project will be.thinking about an G-SSL bus comp, but I may have to do an LA2A soon as well. Not elegant and a real pain when you want to make dynamic adjustments to your compressor while summing, but it does work. If you must use external gear for this purpose, and you don't use Cubase or Nuendo, for now you will need to record the sum of your percussion tracks through your eternal compressor, record the sum of your percussion tracks internally in Sonar, manually align the two tracks, and then sum the two tracks to taste. The UAD 1176LN is a good one for compressing drum tracks for parallel processing. Lowering your latency buffers will help, but you'll still have phasing since, as I'm sure you are aware, proper parallel compression requires sample accurate alignment.įortunately, plugin (not the external insert plugin) latency compensation is handled very well. I believe Cubase and Nuendo are only DAW's who have dealt successfully with this issue. When using parallel compression via an external compressor you have to deal with playback latency which causes phasing issues when trying to audibly balance the two tracks. Unfortunately, there are no good solutions here. It just means that I'm hitting the comp really hard :) One more thing, in the cwb the word "slammed" in some of the track names does not reference all-button slam mode on the 1176.
#Urei 1176 compressor plugin download
Click here to download a zipped cwb that contains these test recordings (I bounced the plugin so you don't need to have a UAD card). I'm curious to see what some of you folks think about the sound of this unit. I got a short drum clip and ran it through the UAD 1176 emulation and the G1176 on roughly equal settings. Second, sadly I don't have an actual UA 1176 to compare it against, but I do have a UAD-2 and the 1176 emulation, so I made some test recordings. I can always bounce the VST, record the output of the compressor and align by hand, but I'm hoping there is a better way that I'm missing. I also used Lundahl input and output transformers.įirst, how do you folks use outboard gear and avoid phase problems, specifically with VSTi's? When I run a drum VST like Superior Drummer2 and try to set up parallel compression by using the external insert plugin in Sonar I can't seem to eliminate phase problems regardless of the settings I use in the EI plugin. The G1176 is a FET compressor taken from the original UREI 1176 designs (specifically, it's based on the UREI 1176 LN rev#F). So a couple days ago I finished building a G1176.
